A LIVE ALBUM!! Oh yes. Yesyes. MMMM yes. Recorded on one microphone held in the back of the room, this was Paulygon’s (aka me-the-author-of-this-post) set on May 27th at the 119 Gallery. Before you inevitably download it and hear it and cry for mercy at the nameless sky above you . . . here’s some background on the show – no seriously, there’s an interesting story here . . . Paulygon usually works alone (though he is a member of a few other projects, namely Ununi, and Fall of the Tin Can Empire – also, ex Streight Angular) but on this particular occasion he gathered a group of 10 fucking-incredible musicians from various locale throughout Massachusetts. At the time of the set many of the members had never met – and even today, many of them barely know each other. Yes. This was an improvised set among 10 people; 10 groups of – for lack of a better way of putting it – strangers. We had:
On Lap Steel – Trevor Sohnen
On Violin – Kimberly Holte
On Vocals – Gaetana Brown, Amber Fetik, Sam Le Beau, Trevor Sohnen, Paulygon
On Drums – Patrick McConnell
On Bass – Sam Le Beau
On Sampling and Sound FX – Chris Gross
On Saxophone – Mark Schiffer, Brian Conant
On Guitar and Lead Vocals– Paulygon
This show occurred at the 119 Gallery in Lowell, MA. If you happen to live near there/be passing through Lowell be sure check that place out!
Speaking in the first person once again: I am indebted to the efforts of this wonderful group of people. To help make this show happen they all contributed lots of time out of their own already-busy schedules to practice and meet with me. The result is this album. It is ramshackle; it is epic; it is raw; and yet it came together beautifully and you would probably think we rehearsed all the songs – a testament to the skill (and Musical Vision) of the band’s 10 members. (Did I mention that we had some last-minute equipment failure too?)
Be sure to check out some of the other projects that these wonderful people are a part of:
Gaetana Brown, Metallic Spoon, The Pleasant Sweaters, Fright Witch, The Gingerbread Kids, Inner Combustion, Satch, Fall of the Tin Can Empire, Jack Nance, Perseus
